As 2015 comes to a close, it’s the perfect time to look back and share what I thought were the standout films of the year. The criteria for making the list was simple — I had to give it 3.5 stars or more on my Letterboxd account. The Camera Viscera XMAS LIST!
Ah, Christmas: that time of year for long lines at the store, fistfights over parking spots, and crowds of a-holes blocking your path. Thankfully, the internet was invented and online shopping helped change the way we do our holiday purchasing. But somewhere along the way, when we no longer had to set foot in a brick-and-mortar store, we forgot an important aspect of spending money on stuff: supporting local businesses.
So with the big day less than a month away, I thought I’d offer up a few suggestions of hardworking artists — regular Joes and Janes like you and I — people who I’m friends with, have purchased stuff from, or just whose work I just flat out admire. What’s in Doc’s Candy Bucket?
I’m far too old to go trick-or-treating anymore (according to everyone but me), but the trade off is that, as an adult who earns a paycheck, I can go to the store and buy as much Halloween candy as I want, whenever I want. And no one can tell me I’m too old to do that. So there.
The thing I miss most about the prospect of free candy was the random hodgepodge assortment that would be unveiled at the end of the night. Sifting through the sweets and chocolates, the hard candies and wrapped mysteries, the cheap stuff and the primo stuff. That is an element I long for. But as I said before, I’m adult now and I can do whatever I want (wahoo!), so I’ve decided to compile a list of treats I haven’t had in decades. 5 Things I Love About HALLOWEEN!
For obvious reasons, Halloween is the quintessential October horror film. Come this time of year, sites will be flooded with articles and lists praising the film and its enduring legacy, and some will even promise to tell you 15 things you never knew about the movie. They’ll be wrong, of course, but hey.
As a horror fan and horror-website-runner-person myself, it is my duty to contribute a Halloween-related listicle during the month of October lest I want my gorehound card revoked. But instead of pointing out things everyone knows already (we get it, it’s a William Shatner mask) or attempting to write a thesis on the ‘sin equals death’ puritanical aspects of the movie, I thought I’d simply point out a few things I dig about it. Feelings that you the reader may also share. No need to over-analyze this sucker!

Killer Calendar!
Horror fans just love to write about holiday horror films. As we head into the tail end of the year, we horrorhound bloggists and writerers and whatever-yacall’ems jump at the opportunity to write up list upon list of our favorite Halloween and Christmas horror flicks. Occasionally we get clever, but mostly we end up just writing listicle stuff. The balance between clever and accessible is actually a pretty hard to thing pull off! You start typing an article with good intentions, but before you know it, you’re 500 words deep in a piece about too-specific niche type stuff, like, “A list of Halloween horror movies with only two female leads and a killer who doesn’t wear a mask and only kills with handheld garden tools.” It’s gruesome stuff. Welcome to Wiki Wednesday (say that five times fast), where each Wednesday I’ll share an article from the dubiously encyclopedic website. Sometimes it’ll be topical, sometimes random — either way, maybe you’ll walk away having learned something new. Can’t be any worse than what they’re teaching kids in schools these days.
H.H. Holmes (the original Triple H) is considered to be America’s first serial killer. In all, it is estimated he killed near 200 people during his lifetime. He murdered a majority of them during Chicago’s World’s Columbian Exposition, in a ‘hotel’ he had built which was later dubbed his “Murder Castle.” Click below to read all about his macabre past-times.
